If a file has become lost or corrupted, you can use the Windows System File Check (SFC) utility to extract a new file from your Window Installation CD. In this example, the file "msgsrv32.exe" will be extracted to the Windows\System folder.

1. You can reinstall the file msgsrv32.exe using the Windows 98 SE System File Checker utility. Put in your Windows CD (or see *note below) Click Start/Run Type in:

sfc

2. Choose the 2nd option: "Extract one file from installation disk". In the "Specify system file you would like to extract" box, type in:

msgsrv32.exe

and click the "Start" button.

3. In the "Restore From" box, click the "Browse" button and navigate to your Windows CD (usually D:\win98)

Change the "D" to the drive letter of your CD drive.

*note: If you don't have a Windows CD, you may be able to use the browse button to navigate to:           C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

If you have trouble finding the .cab files, please email me.

3. In the "Save File In" box, browse to:           C:\Windows\System

4. Click OK, when prompted to backup the file to:           C:\WINDOWS\Helpdesk\SFC

Click "Yes".

If prompted, click "Yes" to allow the creation of the directory.

You should see a "file successfully extracted" dialog box and possibly a prompt requiring a restart.

Restart your computer. If you see an error message, it is likely caused by a typographical error.

Check everything very carefully.

In the "Restore From" box, click the "Browse" button and navigate to your Windows CD (usually D:\win98)

In the "Save File In" box, browse to:

C:\Windows\System

The file save location may be automatically entered by Windows.

C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

Click OK

Click OK When prompted to backup the file to:

C:\WINDOWS\Helpdesk\SFC

Click OK

Restart your computer.

To extract a different file, just type in it's full name in the "Extract one file from installation disk" box. To find where the file needs to be stored, use the Find\Files and Folders feature.

If you see an error message, it is likely caused by a typographical error.

Check everything very carefully.

The error message says to check the Restore From location because it is looking for a misspelled filename.

In the example error shown above, the file name is miss-spelled.

msgserv32.exe instead of msgsrv32.exe
